Artist statement

“I have always seen and captured life’s fleeting moments in my mind’s eye as long as I can remember, it is only since I have had a camera to capture these once in a lifetime happenings I can share with you, the viewer.

Through my work, influenced by the classic photographers of this world like Bresson to the modern documentary storytellers like Rob Hornstra, I will visually note the changing face of our society.”

Interview with Keith Lloyd Davenport

Keith, why did you become a photographer?

My late father gave me his old SLR when I was about 20 years old, I immediately fell in love with the medium. It was then, I knew it was my path.

What does photography mean to you?

Photography means everything to me, it is my life and my passion.

How would you describe your photographic language and creative process? How do you plan and execute a project? Both technically and conceptually?

My photographic language is straightforward and honest.

When I conceive a project idea, I write down my thoughts on how to convey the story, a rough draft, research the subject, make contact with your subjects and then start shooting.

A project can take time. It develops as you work, for example the photo essay with the fish market in Peterhead. I have shot as much as I can in the way I first saw the project looking. I now see different ways to tackle the project and incorporate it into the images I have already.

Which photographer has inspired you most?

When I first discovered photography, I was fascinated by Henri Cartier-Bresson. He captured life in such an honest, beautiful and romantic way.

What’s your favorite inspirational quote about photography?

“If your photographs aren’t good enough, you’re not close enough.”

Robert Capa

What camera and photographic equipment do you use?

Leica MP with 35mm & 50mm lenses, Mamiya 7ii with 80mm lens, Olympus Mju ii 35mm compact, Metz 45CL Flash and Leica SF24D Flash.

What’s your favorite website about photography?

I currently look at what is going on in our own backyard, so check out the work of the collective “Document Scotland”: www.documentscotland.com

I look at FOTO8 a fair bit to keep an eye on new documentary photography.

What book about photography would you recommend?

“Life After Zog – And Other Stories” is inspirational and thought-provoking documentary photography by Chiara Tocci, taking a look at the mass migration from Albania and who is left behind after the fall of communism.

Which advice would you give someone who wants to get started with photography?

To believe in yourself and follow your dream.
