Hajime Kimura

Hajime Kimura (born in 1982) is a contemporary photographer from Japan, currently based in Chiba (Japan). He studied photography in a photography school in Tokyo.

Artist statement

In 1982, Hajime Kimura was born in Chiba prefecture next to Tokyo. In 2005, he graduated from architecture at Shibaura institute of technology in Tokyo. Since 2006 he has been actively photographed Asian countries, including China, India and Japan. Kimura wishes to express the invisible reality of human existence in the world with photography, and aspires to commit to his subject as hard as possible. His work has been exhibited and published world-wide.

Interview with Hajime Kimura

Hajime, what was your most memorable moment shooting pictures?

When I took my dad who passed way.

Why did you become a photographer?

I don’t think I’m a photographer, but I just like photography.

What does photography mean to you and what do you want to transmit with your pictures?

It means my expression on the ground and I wanna re-portray it on my images again.

Which photographer has inspired you most?

Peter Beard. I feel his works much more free and emotional.

How would you describe your photographic voice and creative process?

As I might answer to former question, I try to describe my own expression there on my images.

What’s important in order to develop an own photographic voice?

Except shooting, editing is the most important process to make sure and break my bias down.

What do you consider to be the axis of your work – technically and conceptually?

Building the relationship to my subject before shooting.

What qualities and characteristics does a good photographer need?

It needs a kind of intimacy to its theme.

What does a photo need to be a great photo in your eyes?

Taking time and unique view.

Where do you draw inspiration from for your photographic projects?

Just from my experiences and memories of my life.

What kind of photography equipment and photographic supplies do you use?

Nikon FM2 and Fuji Neopan 400.

What photography book would you recommend?

“Peter Beard” by Peter Beard. I feel it has much fun to his theme for a long period.

Which advice would you give someone who wants to become a (professional) photographer?

Your interests are more important than theme even if they are small things.
